Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming
Robert Greene, VP Product Strategy at Versant, on using the Versant Object Database for data management in MMO applications (massive multiplayer online games): MMO software applications are characterized by complex domain models and large amounts of concurrent users. Robert outlines how to achieve minimum latency, high performance, future-proof scalability and server efficiency for MMO’s by using the Versant Object Database instead of traditional relational database technologies.
Now and then we send out the Microscope Questionaire to certain people - this time to Michael Damkier.
As the Lead Technical Writer at Versant, Michael is responsible for all the documentation about the Versant Object Database Technolgy and the FastObjects product line. Born in the US, he lives and workes in Hamburg, Germany, since 1995. Here’s what Michael answered:
We are currently seeking a Technical Support Engineer to expand our Customer Services Team in Hamburg, Germany. A Technical Support Engineer at Versant responds to a wide range of product-related and technical questions regarding the use and operation of our products and troubleshoot customer issues involving scripting and C++ / Java programming logic.

This is an article by Oliver Krohne published in Videscope Magazin #002. Oliver works as an Engineer in R&D (Scale Group) at Versant. Prior to to his work with Versant, he wrote his diploma thesis about query performance and optimization.

Users of the Versant Object Database come from very different industries. Whether in bioinformatics, telecommunications or online gaming – they all have one thing in common. Their great demands on performance.
To meet those demands, we have carried out extensive studies and tests in the Versant Lab on the question of how we can optimize queries. The true power of a database is demonstrated in its handling of queries. How quickly can we generate the results for a given query? And how can we reduce expenditures in terms of memory usage, disk access and communication? The following text outlines the basic challenges and findings.
The Service Release 4 of the Versant Object Database 7.0.1. has been launched with a multitude of enhancements for improved performance and scalability.Among other, we have introduced dramatic latch performance improvements. Now, Lab tests with real-life customer applications have shown dramatic performance improvements.
FastObjects gives you complete freedom in designing your object model. Nevertheless – with regard to performance – you should consider some things when creating your object model. The proposals presented in this article are by no means to be interpreted as limitations to your freedom to design your object model to fit your needs. But when performance is essential, you should be aware of the following in your object model design in order to help FastObjects run at its optimum.
Use a Minimum Number of Classes in Your Object Model
One thing you should consider during the design phase is the granularity of your object model. For every object in the database FastObjects has to perform certain maintenance tasks. For example, each object gets its own object identity. And, by default, a special collection type to hold all objects of a specific class, called an extent, is maintained. Also, relationships among objects must be maintained, etc.
Tele Management World is the leading global telecommunications event focusing on the management, monetization and operations of cutting-edge communications, entertainment and online services. This year’s event takes place in the Rosen Shingle Creek, Orlando, FL, November 16 – 20, 2008.
So, if you are around, come by and visit our booth (#223) in the TM Forum Management World Orlando Expo. The Expo is a high-powered, compelling mix of big names and emerging suppliers focused on the management and operations of converging services - as for instance Versant.
